UofC Mingle

This was my CPSC 481-HCI group project. We had to create a prototype for an application that we chose. The project was focused on doing user research, ideation, design, prototyping and evaluating. The project is a clubs and events search application for the University of Calgary. I received an A- for the project. Note: Not actually affiliated with the University of Calgary at all.

Investigation

We had to figure out whether there are interests for making our application. We interviewed 5 different types of people in regards to clubs and events, and we asked them 6 questions regarding clubs and events. The majority of people find it difficult to look for clubs on campus, as there is a lack of publicity to them and some don't even know that there is a list of clubs on the website of the Student Union. Another investigation we did was by secondary research, where we read research papers of similar systems and discovered things we should do and things we should avoid.

Design

We came up with features of the application and created an affinity diagram to see how everything connects. Afterwards we drew sketches of each page we are going to implement on a phone-sized paper as it will also be used later when we are prototyping.

Prototyping

The first prototyping we did was of paper prototyping, where we recorded a video of navigating through the pages. Following that, we used a software called Adobe XD to create our low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototype and to start making the prototype with aesthetic design in mind.

Evaluation

We performed heuristic evaluation by giving our application to another group for them to test out. They gave us very important feedback and some were even critical, meaning we had to fix it right away. Colours were a very strong feedback we received as our first prototype, the colours did not work well as it gives associations that we did not have. Otherwise, the prototype was well received.
